We have been fans of David Ramey’s since he first appeared in the store as the winemaker at Chalk Hill in the mid 90s. He put that winery on the map, and subsequently enhanced the reputations of Dominus and Rudd Estate before starting his eponymous award-winning winery.
His groundbreaking work with indigenous yeasts and malolactic and barrel fermentation yielded a new California style that was richer, more lush and silky smooth than previously known, and at the same time keeps a sense of Old World.
He’s famous for his Napa Cabernets. The 2007 Ramey Napa Cabernet may be his best yet for the regional appelation. Like the other wines of that wonderful Cabernet vintage, it is dense, rather thick and creamy, but with a solid core of firm herb and cedar. Steve Tanzer calls it “open-knit and accessible”
Robert Parker says it is “a stunning yet reasonably priced, high end Napa Cabernet Sauvignon.”
It certainly is high-end. We are making it even more reasonable.

Steve Tanzer - “Inky ruby. Intensely perfumed bouquet of red- and blackcurrant, dark chocolate and anise, with mounting spiciness. More open-knit and accessible than last year's tasting suggested it would be, offering sweet dark fruit and cherry flavors and building tannins. The fruit takes over on the finish, which echoes the spice and cherry notes. This has turned out better than I expected, perhaps because all of the Larkmead fruit went into this wine in this vintage.”
