Peter Hemenway in Montepulciano: Fattoria Le Terrazze

Left - Fattoria le Terrazze
The story of Antonio Terni is one of those that illustrates how our experiences in one phase of life tend to find expression in our new endeavors as well. Antonio grew up in South America and eventually studied physics at university. Later, when the oppurtunity came up to restore and run his familys old wine estate in Marche, he said yes.
With a combination of intelligence and dedication, Antonio turned Fattoria Le Terrazze into one of the best and most respected wine estates in all of eastern Italy. Two of his wines have become very famous. The single vineyard Montepulciano Sassa Neri was featured in the book Accidental Connoissuer as a prime example of the concept of terroir. The 2006 Le Terrazze Rosso Conero Riserva Sassa Neri clearly shows the heights the Montepulciano grape can attain, with great depth, definition and complexity.
On the unconventional side, Antonio turned his vision back to his education in physics and produces a wine in homage to chaos theory. The blend of grapes changes every vintage and each year the label is a new computor generated fractal. The 2007 Le Terrazze Marche Rosso Chaos (50% Montepulciano, 25% Syrah, and 25% Merlot) shows a layered wealth of fruit, great structure and balance.
While it is true that Antonio has other fun, like his two wines made in homage to his musical hero Bob Dylan, I feel that the two wines in this offer define the very top level of this estate. Antonio is a brilliant, creative and very hard working individual and it shows clearly in these wines.
